Mozart’s opera Trollflöjten (The Magic Flute) is undoubtedly one of the most famous and beloved operas in history. It is a timeless tale full of imagination in which music, mystery, and humanity are woven together. Among many “opera hits” are Papageno’s bird-catcher aria and the Queen of the Night’s revenge aria—tunes that many people can hum (but few can truly master!).
In The Magic Flute you will find everything you could wish for in a classic fairy tale: a heroic prince from a far away land, a princess to save, a terrifying monster, a funny sidekick, wicked villains, magic, adventure, trials and tribulations, courage, friendship, love, and a happy ending.
But it is not purely a children’s fairy tale. The opera is filled with symbolism, mysticism, and hidden messages. Both Mozart and the librettist Schikaneder were Freemasons and drew a lot of inspiration from their traditions.
A Celebrated Production from England
This acclaimed production, from the English company Opera North, is filled with visual splendor and brings us along into a rich dream world where imagination and reality blend together.
At the heart of the story lies the struggle between two powerful opposites: the Queen of the Night, associated with darkness, magic, and emotion, and Sarastro, who represents light, science, and reason.
Who is good and who is evil is far from obvious, and when Prince Tamino is thrown into this conflict, a great adventure begins. The Queen of the Night sends him away to save her daughter Pamina, who has been abducted by Sarastro.
Trials and Heroism
To succeed, Tamino must undergo a series of trials, armed with a magical flute. By his side is the good-natured bird-catcher Papageno, who is not particularly interested in heroism. His greatest wishes in life are more about finding a life partner and enjoying good food and wine.
Along the way Pamina is manipulated by her mother, and is even urged to murder Sarastro. Yet it is in her quest for freedom and love that the true strength of the story takes shape. In the end it is Pamina who leads Tamino through the final and most dangerous trials, through blazing fire and rushing water.
