Welcome to season 20/21

Season 2020/21 includes much-loved classics, lesser known gems and two world premieres.

Så som i himmelen

Så som i himmelen (As it is in heaven)

MUSICAL As it is in Heaven is a gripping story of love, community and the healing power of music. Based on Swedish Kay Pollak’s much-loved film, the musical was an immediate success when it premiered in Stockholm. “Gabriellas sång” is included, of course, as well as new music composed by hitmaker Fredrik Kempe. 
Premiere 5 February.

OPERA Verdi’s Shakespeare inspired comic opera meets Orwell's Animal Farm. The title role as the glutinous braggart Falstaff is played by the Austrian bass-baritone Martin Winkler, a regular performer on prestigious stages such as Bayreuth, the Salzburg Festival and the Metropolitan. Premiere 7 November. 

Funny Girl Malmö Operae

Funny Girl

MUSICAL Funny Girl is the classic musical about the life of Broadway star Fanny Brice. She performed on the sparkling stages of New York in the early 20th century. The leading role as the sharp and funny Fanny is played by Sanna Nielsen. The cast also includes the Swedish stars Marianne Mörck, Ann-Louise Hanson and Johan Rabaeus.

Fallet Makropulos (The Makropulos Affair)

OPERA The dream about cheating death and living forever is as ancient as humanity itself. But is eternal life really desirable? This is the question at the heart of Leoš Janáček’s expressive opera. The leading role is played by the internationally acclaimed soprano Agneta Eichenholz, who will be returning to Malmö, where her career was once launched. Premiere 20 March.

Circus Days and Nights

CIRCUS OPERA This collaboration with the contemporary circus group Cirkus Cirkör is composed by the legendary Philip Glass. Look forward to a sensational genre debut, full of surprises: a circus opera! World premiere 29 May.


The Nutcracker

BALETT In December we welcome the Tivoli Ballet Theatre and their production of The Nutcracker. A performance full of Christmas spirit for the whole family. 
Premiere 31 December. 


Väntarna (The Waiting Ones)

CHILDREN A few tattered dolls and teddy bears are waiting for their owner Katarina. When she doesn’t show up, the toys start to worry: doesn’t she like us anymore? Follow their speculations, antics and dealings while waiting for their owner. Väntarna (The Waiting) is a poetic story for children aged 4 – 6, by the author and poet Werner Aspenström, with music by Lars Johan Werle. Premiere 15 February.

Det magiska OM

Det magiska Om (The magic If)

WORK SHOP Encounter the magic of the stage in a workshop about the art of opera. The audience will be part of the artistic process, and their ideas incorporated into the opera Väntarna. For children aged 6 and up. From 12 October.

Così fan tutti

TOURING Mozart’s classic opera gets a new twist when the girls take over in this genre-bending and rebellious production. Will also be performed at Verkstan. Premiere 12 September.

Dead or alive

Dead or alive

TOURING Dead or Alive – the ballad of Kate Warne is a brand new musical about the world’s first female detective, active in Chicago in the 1850s. Will also be performed at Verkstan. World premiere 27 February.

Malmö Opera’s singers and musicians perform their personal favourites in the Opera House foyer.


Starting 10 October
Sing along to the greatest hits of musical theatre and opera. Led by Rickard Söderberg.


27 November
The Jupiter Symphony, music by W A Mozart.


Starting 17 December
Get into the Christmas spirit with this concert featuring Anne Sofie von Otter, Rickard Söderberg and Marianne Mörck. 


26 mars
Himlen kysser havet (The sky kissing the sea), music by Benjamin Staern, Rolf Martinsson and Wilhelm Stenhammar.


13-14 April 2021
A colourful gala in support of the organisation Star for Life, featuring Malmö Opera Academy students and invited star soloists.


15 May 
Music by Maurice Ravel, John Williams and Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov.
