OPERA Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Falstaff is a comedy of errors derived primarily from Shakespeare’s plays The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV. The famous final fugue of the opera proclaims that all the world’s a joke. It’s difficult to disagree with that statement. These days the absurdity of real life seems to rival that of an operatic comedy.
MUSICAL As it is in Heaven is a gripping story of love, community and the healing power of music. Based on Swedish Kay Pollak’s much-loved film, the musical was an immediate success when it premiered in Stockholm. “Gabriellas sång” is included, of course, as well as new music composed by hitmaker Fredrik Kempe.
Premiere 5 February.
OPERA The dream about cheating death and living forever is as ancient as humanity itself. But is eternal life really desirable? This is the question at the heart of Leoš Janáček’s expressive opera. The leading role is played by the internationally acclaimed soprano Agneta Eichenholz, who will be returning to Malmö, where her career was once launched. Premiere 20 March.
CHILDREN A few tattered dolls and teddy bears are waiting for their owner Katarina. When she doesn’t show up, the toys start to worry: doesn’t she like us anymore? Follow their speculations, antics and dealings while waiting for their owner. Väntarna (The Waiting) is a poetic story for children aged 4 – 6, by the author and poet Werner Aspenström, with music by Lars Johan Werle. Premiere 15 February.
