In the school kitchen, Irene and Ritva work together. They disagree about most things. Irene wants to renew and serve children pan pizza and soda. Ritva hates change. She has worked in the school kitchen since the beginning of time and wants everything to stay the way it’s always been. On Mondays, fish cakes are served—period.
One day, the mysterious Mrs. Hansson arrives and starts observing their work. Irene and Ritva mostly think she’s in the way. It turns out that Hansson has been assigned by the principal to streamline operations and cut costs. Surely a small school can manage with just one person in the kitchen? Suddenly, the daily routine turns into a competition. One of them has to go. Will it be Irene or Ritva?
Måndag är fiskbulledag is a fast-paced and entertaining newly written opera based on a 2005 play by Anders Duus. The music, with lively jazz influences, is composed by percussionist Lars Ljungberg for piano and vibraphone. The libretto is provided by Maria Sundqvist.
